Atlantic City is a great destination.
Poker and poker tournaments are our interest, but Atlantic City also
offers everything that you can find in Las Vegas. Atlantic City has
several world class casinos. Each casino offers blackjack, roulette,
craps, and all other forms of gambling. World class restaurants, clubs,
great comps, and everything else you can think of.
An important note is that aside from
the major tournaments which will attract a large number of players
regardless of which casino holds the event, the daily tournaments can
vary significantly in field size. One tournament can have 400 players,
and another can have 16.
If you are new to poker tournaments, then
a small field might be the way to go, but if you want a true poker
tournament experience, you must play a large field.
Casino
Description:
The Borgata Atlantic City Casino has replaced the Taj Mahal
as my favorite place to play Tournament Poker. I personally prefer a
large field of poker players. The Borgata Atlantic City usually has
about 100 to 125 poker players on their non-guaranteed weekday
tournaments, and 200 to 500 players on their guaranteed poker
tournaments. (See Wednesday for an example of guaranteed payout
Borgata poker tournament.) When the
Borgata increased the Wednesday buy-in cost from $50., with an optional
add-on of $50 (no re-buys), to $100 with no add-on, the number of
players dropped to about half. Even so, the field is still large for
Atlantic City poker tournaments. If it's within your poker budget, it's
probably the best tournament poker deal you'll find in any of the
Atlantic City Casinos.
I don't often play cash games, but for those who do (98% of poker
players - no doubt), the Borgata has action at any buy-in level you
want. For anyone who has played poker outside of Las Vegas, you'll find
that the Borgata poker room is huge.
The Borgata Hotel Casino Spa is currently the highest quality casino in
Atlantic City. Although I have to acknowledge that I've never been to
the Trump Marina; the Trump Marina is likely to rival (same section of
Atlantic City) the Borgata. If anyone knows, send me an

Marina.) Other Atlantic City casinos come close to its quality, but I'm
not listing them now.
I enjoy playing roulette, a game requiring zero skill. The Borgata's roulette
tables are faster than the tables at other casinos because they have an automated chip
stacker. As of this writing, the other casinos still have the roulette
dealers re-stacking the losing bets/chips. (Are they actually called
dealers? I don't know.) At the Borgata, they simply sweep (by hand),
all the chips into a funnel, which then mechanically gives the roulette
dealers neat stacks to place back onto the roulette tables. I'm
actually surprised that the other Atlantic City casinos haven't figured
out that if they can speed up the roulette game, they will earn more
money. (You can't beat roulette in the long run!)
Unnecessary note: The Borgata Drink Girls/Servers are pretty much the
hottest Women you're going to find in Atlantic City. Just wanted to
throw that in here!!!!
The Borgata restaurants range from fast food (healthy and un-healthy),
to five star restaurants. The Borgata also has the best buffet I've ever
had in any of the Atlantic City casinos. I'm not a food expert, but I'm
personally convinced that the Borgata Buffet has five star chefs making
all the high end and simple foods you can want. I usually walk away from
the buffet swearing off food.
There is so much more that can be written about the quality of the
Borgata. My interest is tournament poker. I'll leave the great reviews
of the Borgata to someone else. The Borgata also has top entertainers
on a regular basis, a world class spa, and high quality rooms, suites
etc.
If you're heading to Atlantic City for a vacation, the Borgata is a

Casino Description:
The
Hilton Atlantic City poker room is a very comfortable place to play
poker. It is not a large room, but it is an easygoing atmosphere.
Typically, the Hilton poker tournaments have a very small field of
players (2 –to – 5 tables). This is good for players who aren’t used to
live poker play. The poker tournament prize is also small due to the low
buy-in and low player count. The experienced poker player, or the poker
player who prefers a large field or prize, may feel as if he's wasting his
time. This only applies to the tournaments, not to the cash games.
Although I rarely
see a large number of cash games running, I have to assume (I don’t play
cash games often) that the money flows. I make this assumption because
whenever I’m there, I see players (unknown to anyone except those who
play a lot of poker in Atlantic City) whom I know are equal to the best
pros in the game, either playing or hovering around. I don’t typically
see more than one or two of these poker players at the Hilton, but the
ones I see are sharks. I can’t remember visiting the Hilton Atlantic
City poker room without seeing at least one of them. If you’re a
novice, don’t let this observation scare you off the game, every casino
poker room has its share of sharks, so if you want to play live poker,
you’re going to have to deal with poker sharks!!!
The
Hilton Atlantic City Casino is
where I sometimes go to play relaxed poker tournaments. I will usually
only go there if I’m in Atlantic City with a novice poker player,
and it’s the last stop before we leave (That’s a compliment!). I don’t
play there for the money. I just play to enjoy the game. I typically
walk away from the Atlantic City Hilton feeling like I’ve just played a
bunch of tourists or vacationers. In fact, if I had to describe the
types of players in the poker tournaments, I would say most of them are
on vacation and most don’t seem as if they play live poker often. I might
be wrong, but that’s the feeling that I get ever time I play a Hilton
Poker Tournament. (Don’t try to bluff many of these players. lol)
Having said that, I need to point out that the margin of difference
between the skills a professional poker player and an experienced
amateur is not as large as media would lead you to believe.
Although it’s not my
favorite place to gamble, the Hilton Casino is one of the better casinos
that you will find in Atlantic City. The casino has every type of game
that you can want to play.
The Atlantic City
Hilton has a lot to offer. Visit the Hilton Atlantic City website for
information about entertainment, restaurants etc. They have it all.

The Taj Mahal Atlantic City poker room
used to be the best place to play for both the experienced poker player
and the novice. Professional poker players often played in the Taj daily
poker tournaments for practice. They did so because the competition at
the Taj was very strong. If you're playing to keep your game sharp, you
want to play the best, and the best poker players used to be at the Taj.
The Borgata won over many players from
the Taj (and all of A-C for that matter). Although the Taj lost a lot of
its poker players to the newer poker room at The Borgata, and the
guaranteed prize pools that the Borgata offers its players (guarantees
change - see schedules for current), you can bet that the management of
the Taj will fight hard to win back Atlantic City Poker Players. In
fact, the Taj Mahal now has its own guaranteed payout of $20,000 for the
Friday 7:15 game ($225 buy-in).

about this tournament, which they say will run until December 2008:
"The
Big Fridays event is ideal for players who want an early start to their
tournament weekend. Every Friday at 7:15 PM, Trump Taj Mahal hosts a
$20,000 prize pool guaranteed No-Limit Hold'em event"
The battle for the poker players in
Atlantic City is heating-up. The Borgata is currently the leader.
The Taj Mahal used to be the leader, and will fight hard to win back the
Atlantic City Poker player.
On a Wednesday, after I played in a
tournament in the Borgata, I went to the Taj to play a second
tournament. They did not have a large enough field for me to want
to stay and play. I think they had about 22 players. For the first time
in my tournament hopping life, I went to the Taj and then left without
playing. I've done that at other casinos, but this was the first time I
did this at the Taj. If I'm going to play in a small field, I'd
rather play at the Hilton A-C.
Don't misunderstand me. The Taj Mahal
Atlantic City has always offered some of the best poker in Atlantic
City. They have a lot of enticing to do if they want to get back to
being the #1 poker room in Atlantic City.
If you're new to Atlantic City,
especially if you're on vacation, you should play at least one
tournament at the Taj, preferably on a weekend when they have a larger
field.
